Marine reverse engineering

A critical yacht or boat component fails, and the OEM part is obsolete, backordered, undocumented, or no longer practical to source on the vessel’s timeline.

What Coast Dynamix does

Coast Dynamix leads reverse engineering from what remains — photos, measurements, partner scans when needed, or the failed part itself — into CAD, then through manufacturing partners to finished parts. We deliver the component and can install it on the vessel or at the yard when that support is quoted. Specialized scanning and material analysis are coordinated through qualified partners when a project requires them.

Suitable component examples

  • Broken brackets, mounts, and hardware
  • Obsolete door and hatch hardware
  • Adapters and interface parts with unknown geometry
  • Undocumented fittings recovered from a damaged original

Inputs needed from the customer

  • Photos of the part and mounting location
  • The failed or sample part when available
  • Known dimensions, bolt patterns, or clearances
  • Material clues or service environment notes
  • Timeline and quantity needs

Expected deliverables

  • Reverse-engineered 3D CAD / STEP model
  • Manufacturing drawings when scoped
  • Manufactured replacement parts when fabrication is in scope
  • Delivery of finished components
  • On-vessel or yard installation when requested and quoted
  • Material recommendation when enough data exists

Process overview

  1. Step 1

    Intake & documentation

Review photos, measurements, and project constraints. Clarify what must match the original interfaces versus what can be improved.

  2. Step 2

    Measurement & partner data

Capture dimensions in the shop or field. Coordinate 3D scanning or material analysis through qualified partners when justified.

  3. Step 3

    CAD reconstruction

Rebuild geometry in CAD with manufacturable intent and verified mounting interfaces.

  4. Step 4

    Manufacture, deliver & install

When quoted, coordinate fabrication through manufacturing partners, deliver finished parts, and install on the vessel or at the yard if the customer wants that support.

Related projects

  • Sliding Door Latch Bracket — A failed sliding-door latch bracket on a Broward 112 was reverse engineered, upgraded in CAD, machined in 316 stainless, delivered, and installed on the vessel — plus spare brackets for the owner.
  • Windlass Rope Stop — A fractured windlass rope stop was documented on deck, rebuilt in CAD, and reproduced as engineered replacements — including finished coated parts and a polymer option — so the windlass could return to reliable service without OEM availability.
  • Deck Cam Lever — Worn deck cam levers and a bent fastener were documented against complete replacement kits, with on-vessel block and cleat context — a clear before/after path back to reliable line handling.

FAQ

Do you need the broken part?
It helps, but work can often start from clear photos, measurements, and mounting references. Bring whatever you have.
Is scanning done in-house?
Specialized 3D scanning and laboratory analysis are coordinated through qualified partners when a project needs them — not as an in-house Coast Dynamix laboratory.
Do you only deliver drawings, or finished parts too?
We reverse engineer and design in CAD, then — when fabrication is in scope — have the part made, deliver it, and can install it on the vessel or at the yard if you want that included.
